Title: The Quickening (a trilogy)
Author: Fiona McIntosh
Blurb: "For centuries, a Thrisk General has fought alongside the King of Morgravia, but none ever swore allegiance to a royal as cruel as Celimus.
When General Wyl Thirsk is forced by Celimus to witness the torture of Myrren, a young woman accused of witchcraft, Wyl fears he may become the first of his family to betray the blood oath.
Leading a motley crew of mercenaries, unable to trust anyone, Wyl is sent on a diplomatic mission to a neighbouring territory: He finds treachery every step of the way, and begins to wonder if he will return home alive.
But Myrren, grateful for his compassion, has given Wyl an extraordinary 'gift'. Wyl's life takes an entirely unpredictable turn.... he is about to discover The Quickening."
Rating: There's some pretty graphic and nasty violence so I'd go with at least an R
Fiona McIntosh is a genius. She took a genre I love to bits and peices but often find a little predictable (it's Fantasy- don't we all?) and managed to breathe new life into it. All your old favourite conventions of the fantasy genre are here but this series will keep you on your toes until the very end. I recommend you don't pick this one up unless you have a good two days to spare...Oh and his name is pronounced "Will". I had a "Hermione" moment and called him "Wile" the whole way through then found out- doh!
The books, in order, are: Myrren's Gift, Blood and Memory, Bridge of Souls.
